Background

The department of Education, Research and Development (ERD) was inspired by the observation that many graduates of the International Programme from the different universities in Belgium: Ghent University (UGent), University of Antwerp, KU Leuven, Vrije Universiteit Brussels VUB and alumni were limited in progressing their research aspirations unless they were employed by a university or research institution. By registering with ACP DYSS, a member can apply for research funding and receive necessary support from the ERD department.

The department is aimed at building the spirit of Africanism by enhancing the research and community development skills of the ACP diaspora youth to better engage in community development of their home countries.

General and specific objectives:

The global objective of the department is to foster research and community development in the areas of education and research enhancement skills. Specific objectives are:

To broaden the understanding of ACP diaspora youth on global research and development policy and opportunities through re-education.
Partnering with research institutes in organising trainings and support of young researchers to enhance research skills of ACP diaspora youth in research methodology.
To enhance community development skills by working together with ACP diaspora youth on community development projects.
To enhance employability skills for ACP diaspora youth by supporting internship linkages and providing career guidance and potential opportunities.
To keep ACP diaspora youth informed on research and community development funding opportunities.
To facilitate the publication of research findings from ACP countries regions.
To mobilise resources to support education of girls from marginalised communities of the ACP countries.

Key Project areas:

Education and food security: case of school gardens and school meals in ACP group of countries.
Educational disparities and culture: improving participation of girls from marginalised communities of ACP group of countries in education.
Women empowerment and education: improving participation of women from the ACP group of countries in gainful employment and leadership roles.
Natural resource management and educational linkages: enhancing access of women from the ACP group of countries to natural resources.
